Heating & cooling in Riverside South
Riverside South is one of Ottawa's newer communities, on the east side of the Rideau River south of the airport, about 12 km from our shop. Its homes are mostly recent detached houses and townhomes, so most HVAC work here involves first-generation equipment.

What we see in Riverside South homes
Much of Riverside South has been built since the late 1990s, mainly townhomes and detached houses from large builders. These homes tend to have a high-efficiency gas furnace, central air and an HRV, all installed together. That means the equipment in a given house often ages at the same pace, and owners face several decisions within a few years of each other.
Because these systems are newer, regular maintenance makes a real difference. Dirty filters, a clogged condensate line on a high-efficiency furnace, and an outdoor coil packed with seeds and grass clippings cause many problems in newer homes. A yearly visit catches those before they turn into a cold house or a warm one.
When the original air conditioner needs replacing, a heat pump is often the better buy in a home like this. The ducts are modern and the electrical panel is more likely to have room for it, which makes the switch simpler than in an older house. A gas-heated home can get up to $2,000 from the provincial program if the installation meets its conditions.

FAQ
HVAC in Riverside South: common questions
Not covered here? Call 613-315-7325 and ask a technician.
Our high-efficiency furnace keeps shutting off. What's wrong?
In newer furnaces, a blocked condensate drain is a common cause, along with a dirty flame sensor or a blocked intake or exhaust pipe outside. Check that the outdoor vents are clear of snow, then call us if it continues.
Our house is only ten years old. Does the furnace really need servicing?
Yes. High-efficiency furnaces have more sensors and a condensate system that need checking, and yearly service keeps them running reliably.
Will a heat pump work with our existing furnace?
In most newer homes, yes. The heat pump's indoor coil sits on top of the furnace, and a compatible thermostat decides which one runs based on the outdoor temperature.
