Heating & cooling in Barrhaven
Barrhaven has been one of Ottawa's fastest-growing communities since the 1990s, and much of that growth has been townhomes and newer detached houses on compact lots. Our shop in Carlington is roughly 11 km to the north.

What we see in Barrhaven homes
Barrhaven's housing is mostly newer: detached homes and long rows of townhomes, many built since the 1990s and plenty within the last 15 years. Most have forced-air gas furnaces and central air. In interior townhome units, the outdoor condenser often sits in a small backyard or on a narrow strip beside a deck, which limits what can be installed.
That space problem shapes most equipment decisions here. A standard square heat pump or AC needs clearance on all sides for airflow and service. Side-discharge units like the Goodman SD Series push air out one side instead of the top, so they fit tighter spots. We measure the space and check the City's setback rules before recommending a unit.
Townhome owners also tend to replace equipment one piece at a time. When an original air conditioner from the early 2000s stops cooling, there is a choice: replace it like for like, or switch to a heat pump that also heats. We lay out both options in writing, including how a heat pump would work alongside the existing furnace.

We have an interior townhome. Where would a heat pump go?
Usually where the current air conditioner sits, if the clearances work. If space is tight, a side-discharge unit can often fit. We check the spot, the refrigerant line route and the setback rules at the estimate.
Does my condo corporation need to approve a new outdoor unit?
Some Barrhaven townhomes belong to a condominium corporation with rules on exterior equipment. If yours does, check with the board before replacing or moving an outdoor unit. We can provide the equipment specs for their review.
Our AC is blowing warm air. Is it low on refrigerant?
Sometimes, but a failed capacitor, a dirty outdoor coil or a clogged filter can cause the same symptom. We test before adding refrigerant, because a low charge means there is a leak that needs finding.
