01Is it time?
A heat pump makes sense if…
- 01 Your central air conditioner is 12 or more years old and due for replacement anyway.
- 02 Your gas or electric heating bills keep climbing and you want a cheaper way to heat the shoulder seasons.
- 03 Some rooms are always too hot in summer or too cold in winter.
- 04 You heat with electric baseboards, oil or propane and want to cut running costs.
- 05 Your side yard is narrow and a traditional square condenser won't fit where it needs to go.
- 06 You want to take advantage of Ontario's heat pump rebates or the City of Ottawa's home energy loan.
02The install
What's included in every heat pump install
A heat pump is only as good as the install. Here's what we do on every job, not just the expensive ones.
Room-by-room load calculation
We size the system to your home's actual heat loss, windows, insulation and layout. An oversized heat pump short-cycles; an undersized one leans on backup heat all winter.
Ductwork and airflow check
Heat pumps move more air than most furnaces were set up for. We check static pressure and flag any duct changes before we quote, not halfway through the job.
Proper outdoor placement
Raised on a stand or wall bracket above the snow line, clear of roof drip lines and dryer vents, with enough clearance to defrost and drain.
Clean line-set and electrical work
Refrigerant lines pressure-tested and vacuumed, line-set covered, and the electrical done to code with the right disconnect.
Thermostat and backup setup
If you keep your furnace as backup, we set the switch-over point so the heat pump does most of the work and the furnace only runs when it's cheaper or colder.
Walk-through and paperwork
We show you how it runs, register the manufacturer warranty, and give you the documents you need for any rebate or financing application.
03Featured equipment
Goodman SD Series: a heat pump that fits the side yard you actually have
Most Ottawa homes have the outdoor unit squeezed down a narrow side yard. The Goodman SD Series blows air out the side instead of the top, so the unit is slimmer and can sit closer to the house and the fence.
We added the SD Series in 2026 because it solves a problem we kept running into on infill lots and semis: a good heat pump with nowhere sensible to put it.
- Compact footprint for tight side yards and townhouse lots
- Quiet operation, so it doesn't drown out the patio
- Heats in winter and cools in summer from one outdoor unit
- Built for Canadian weather
- Available as a heat pump or straight air conditioner

04Options
Which kind of heat pump is right for your home?
There's no one answer. We'll recommend one of these after we've seen the house.
Hybrid (dual-fuel)
Best for: Homes with a gas furnace in good shape
A heat pump replaces your air conditioner and handles heating for most of the year. Your gas furnace takes over on the coldest days. It's usually the lowest-risk way to start.
Ducted cold-climate
Best for: Full replacement of furnace + AC
A cold-climate heat pump with an air handler and electric backup heats the whole house through the winter, with no gas furnace needed. It works best when insulation and ducts are in decent shape.
Ductless mini-split
Best for: Homes without ducts, additions, finished basements
Wall-mounted heads in the rooms that need them. Ideal for older homes heated with radiators or baseboards.

Maintenance
A yearly check keeps it efficient and protects the warranty. We'll remind you when it's due.
What does a heat pump cost in Ottawa?
It depends mostly on size, whether you keep your furnace, and how much duct or electrical work the house needs. A hybrid system that replaces an air conditioner costs much less than a full cold-climate conversion.
Your estimate is free and the price is fixed in writing before we start. No hidden install costs.
Rebates & financing
Cold-climate heat pumps can qualify for rebates through Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program, and for financing through the City of Ottawa's Better Homes loan. Programs and amounts change during the year, so we check what you currently qualify for during the estimate and give you the paperwork to apply.
Current programsDo heat pumps actually work in an Ottawa winter?
Yes. Modern cold-climate heat pumps keep heating well below -20°C. On the very coldest nights, a backup takes over: your existing gas furnace in a hybrid setup, or electric heat in an all-electric system. We size it so that happens only a handful of days a year.
Can I keep my gas furnace?
Often, yes, and it's usually the most cost-effective first step. The heat pump replaces your air conditioner and does most of the heating, and the furnace becomes the backup. We check your furnace's age and condition first. Pairing a new heat pump with a furnace that's near the end of its life rarely makes sense.
How long does installation take?
A hybrid install that replaces an existing air conditioner is usually done in one day. Full system replacements or ductless installs with several indoor heads can take two to three days.
Will a heat pump lower my energy bills?
In most homes, yes, especially compared with electric baseboards, oil or propane. Compared with natural gas, the savings depend on gas and electricity rates and on how the backup is set up. We'll walk through realistic numbers for your house instead of quoting a headline percentage.
What is a side-discharge heat pump?
It's an outdoor unit that blows air out the side instead of the top. That makes it slimmer, so it fits narrow side yards and tight lots where a traditional square condenser won't. We install the Goodman SD Series.
How often does a heat pump need maintenance?
Once a year. Because a heat pump runs in both summer and winter, it works more hours than an air conditioner does. A yearly check of refrigerant charge, coils, drainage and electrical keeps it efficient and is usually required to keep the manufacturer warranty valid.
