01Is it time?

A gas fireplace makes sense if…

  • 01 You have a wood-burning fireplace you rarely use because of the mess and the draft.
  • 02 Your living room or basement family room is the coldest room in the house.
  • 03 You want heat that still works during a winter power outage, with a model that supports it.
  • 04 You're renovating and want a fireplace as the focal point of the room.
  • 05 Your old gas fireplace is unreliable, sooty or hard to light.
  • 06 You'd like a cozy room without turning up the whole house.

02The install

What's included in a fireplace install

A fireplace is a gas appliance first and a design feature second. We get both right.

01

Room and model selection

We help you pick a size and heat output that suits the room. A fireplace that's too powerful for a small room will drive you out of it.

02

Venting plan

Direct-vent fireplaces draw combustion air from outside and vent out through the wall or roof. We plan the vent location to meet clearances to windows, doors and decks.

03

Gas line

We run and leak-test the gas line from your meter or existing piping, sized for the fireplace and any other gas appliances in the house.

04

Framing and finishing guidance

We give your contractor or carpenter the clearances and framing dimensions the manufacturer requires for mantels, stone and tile.

05

Electrical and controls

Remote, wall switch or thermostat control, plus the power supply for fans and lighting where the model has them.

06

Start-up and walk-through

We check gas pressure and flame, test the safety controls, and show you how to run it and what yearly service it needs.

04Options

Which kind of gas fireplace do you need?

It depends mostly on whether you already have a fireplace and how you plan to use it.

01

Built-in direct-vent fireplace

Best for: New fireplaces, renovations and basements

A complete unit framed into a wall and vented outside through a short pipe. No chimney needed, so it can go almost anywhere on an outside wall or with a longer vent run.

02

Gas insert

Best for: Existing wood-burning fireplaces

Slides into your current masonry fireplace and vents up the chimney through a new liner. You keep your mantel and surround and get a sealed, efficient gas fire.

03

Replacement of an old gas unit

Best for: Gas fireplaces 15 years or older

Older units often have standing pilots and poor glass seals. A new model is easier to control and usually uses less gas for the same heat.

What does a gas fireplace cost in Ottawa?

The model and size matter, but so does the install. A direct-vent fireplace on an outside wall near the gas meter is simpler than one in the middle of the house with a long vent and gas run. Inserts need a chimney liner, and finishing work like stone or a mantel is a separate cost.

The Napoleon Ascent BX42 is currently on clearance at $3,999 installed. For other models, the consultation is free and we give you the price in writing.

Rebates & financing

Gas fireplaces generally aren't covered by energy-efficiency rebate programs. If you're upgrading other heating equipment at the same time, we'll check what that work may qualify for.

FAQ

Gas Fireplaces: common questions

Not covered here? Call 613-315-7325 and ask a technician.

Can I put a gas fireplace in my existing wood fireplace?

Usually, yes, with a gas insert. It sits inside the firebox and vents up the chimney through a new liner. We inspect the chimney and firebox first to make sure it's suitable.

Do I need a chimney for a gas fireplace?

No. Direct-vent fireplaces vent through a pipe out the wall or roof. That's why they're popular in basements and in homes that never had a fireplace.

Will a gas fireplace work in a power outage?

Many models can still light and produce heat without power, though fans and lights won't run. It depends on the ignition system, so ask us about it when choosing a model.

Can a gas fireplace heat my whole house?

It's best thought of as zone heating for the room it's in and nearby spaces. It can let you keep the main thermostat lower, but it isn't a substitute for your furnace or boiler.

Does a gas fireplace need maintenance?

Yes, once a year. A technician cleans the glass, checks the burner and logs, inspects the vent and tests the safety controls. It keeps the flame looking right and the fireplace burning safely.

Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm?

Yes. Ontario requires carbon monoxide alarms in homes with fuel-burning appliances, including gas fireplaces. Place them near sleeping areas and test them regularly.
