What we see in Nepean homes
Nepean was a township and then a city before it joined Ottawa in 2001, and its neighbourhoods were built in waves. Older areas date from the 1950s and 60s, while planned communities followed through the 1970s and 80s. Most homes use forced-air gas heat, and many have already been through two or three furnaces.
Split-levels and back-splits are common in Nepean, and they are hard to heat evenly. The lower level sits partly below grade and stays cool, while upper bedrooms over a garage or living room can run cold in winter. A single thermostat on the middle level rarely satisfies both. Duct balancing and better return air are often the fix.
Many of these homes also have a family room fireplace that has burned wood for decades or sits unused. A Napoleon gas insert or direct-vent gas fireplace gives that room steady heat at the flip of a switch, without the draft and upkeep of an open chimney. It can also take pressure off a furnace that struggles to reach that room.

Our split-level is cold on one level and warm on another. Is that normal?
It's common, but it can usually be improved. Adjusting dampers, adding return air on the cold level, or a system with a variable-speed blower can even things out.
Can you convert our wood-burning fireplace to gas?
Often, yes. A gas insert fits into the existing masonry fireplace and vents through a new liner in the chimney. We check the firebox size, the chimney and the gas line route at the estimate.
My furnace is 25 years old but still runs. Should I wait for it to fail?
You can, but replacing it on your own schedule avoids losing heat in January and gives you time to compare options like a hybrid heat pump. We'll inspect it and tell you plainly whether it has more years left.
