Heating & cooling in Kanata
Kanata is about 15 km west of our shop in Carlington. Most of its homes went up in stages from the 1970s to the 2000s, so a lot of the original furnaces and air conditioners are coming due for replacement at about the same time.

What we see in Kanata homes
Kanata grew neighbourhood by neighbourhood from the 1970s through the 2000s, leaving a lot of two-storey detached homes and townhouses with forced-air gas heat and central air. Equipment installed during the 1990s and 2000s building boom is now 20 years old or more, which is past the typical service life of a furnace or an air conditioner.
A common complaint in two-storey Kanata homes is a hot second floor in July. Heat rises, the upstairs supply runs are long, and one thermostat in the main hallway can't tell how warm the bedrooms are. Before replacing anything, we check airflow and return air on the upper floor, since balancing often helps more than a bigger unit.
When the air conditioner fails first, it is a good moment to look at a heat pump instead. A cold-climate heat pump cools in summer and carries much of the winter heating, with the existing gas furnace taking over in deep cold. If the furnace is also near the end, replacing both together means one installation and properly matched equipment.

About 15 km from Kanata
Our upstairs bedrooms are always hotter than the main floor. Will a bigger air conditioner fix it?
Usually not. A hot second floor is more often an airflow problem: long supply runs, too little return air upstairs, or dampers still set for winter. We measure first, and a larger unit is the last thing we'd suggest.
Our furnace and AC were both installed when the house was built. Should we replace them together?
If both are around 20 years old, replacing them at once is often simpler and lets us match the indoor and outdoor equipment. If one still has life in it, we'll tell you that too.
Is a heat pump enough on its own for a Kanata winter?
Many cold-climate models heat well into deep cold, but most gas-heated homes here are better served by a hybrid setup that keeps the furnace for the coldest nights. We size the heat pump to your house so it carries most of the season.
