01Local knowledge
What we see in Carp homes
Carp's village has a mix of older homes and newer houses, while the surrounding countryside is mostly farmhouses, bungalows and newer homes on acreage. Heating systems vary just as much: propane furnaces, oil furnaces and boilers, electric baseboards and wood stoves all turn up out here, sometimes more than one in the same house.
That mix is why the heat pump rebate picture is different in Carp than in town. Under the Home Renovation Savings program, a home not heated by natural gas can get up to $7,500 for a cold-climate heat pump, compared with up to $2,000 for an Enbridge gas-heated home. The unit must be pre-approved and installed by a participating contractor.
Rural homes also need equipment that copes with long cold spells and exposed, windy sites. A heat pump paired with the existing propane or oil system keeps a backup heat source in place for the coldest stretches. For homes on baseboards, ductless mini-splits add efficient heat and summer cooling without running new ducts through finished walls.

We heat with oil. Can we switch to a heat pump?
Yes. A cold-climate heat pump can replace most or all of your oil use, and oil-heated homes may qualify for provincial rebates of up to $7,500. Income-qualified households leaving oil may be eligible for more through separate oil-to-heat-pump funding.
Is Carp in your service area?
Yes. We serve Carp and the surrounding rural west end from our shop in Carlington.
Can a gas fireplace run on propane?
Many Napoleon fireplaces come in propane versions or can be converted with a kit. We'll confirm the model and venting suit your home.
