What we see in Stittsville homes
Much of Stittsville was built from the late 1990s onward, and those homes came with builder-grade furnaces and air conditioners chosen mainly on price. That first generation of equipment is now 15 to 25 years old. Early warning signs include a furnace that short-cycles, a failed igniter or inducer motor, or an AC that can't keep up during a heat wave.
Newer homes are also built tighter than older ones, which saves energy but holds in moisture and indoor pollutants. Many have a heat recovery ventilator (HRV) that hasn't been cleaned since move-in. A clogged HRV core, dirty filters and dry winter air from the furnace are common causes of stuffy rooms and condensation on windows.
Toward the edges of Stittsville, some properties sit on larger rural lots and heat with propane or electricity instead of natural gas. For those homes, a cold-climate heat pump can qualify for a much larger provincial rebate than a gas-heated home would, as long as it is pre-approved and installed by one of the program's participating contractors.

What does the HRV in my newer home actually do?
It swaps stale indoor air for fresh outdoor air while recovering much of the heat. If its filters and core aren't cleaned, it moves less air and the house can feel stuffy or humid. We can service it during a furnace tune-up.
Our builder furnace is 18 years old and keeps needing repairs. Repair or replace?
If repairs are adding up and the furnace is close to 20 years old, replacement usually makes more sense. We'll explain the repair and give you a free estimate on new equipment so you can compare.
Our house isn't on natural gas. Are there rebates for a heat pump?
Yes. Ontario's Home Renovation Savings program offers up to $7,500 for a cold-climate heat pump in a home not heated by natural gas. The heat pump has to be pre-approved and installed by a participating contractor, so confirm that before you commit.
